Kidney-shaped tables and Petticoats
Herzogenaurach and the Fifties

Herzogenaurach and the Fifties
A breeze of American way of life, sharing in the economic miracle thanks to bearings and car boom – for Herzogenaurach a new era begins in this decade. The German national soccer team wins – in shoes with three stripes -  the world cup in Bern and the people of Herzogenaurach are taken by the holiday fever. For the first time, the young develop their own culture following American examples. The consumer wishes are moped, record player and tape recorder. Ice-cream parlours and milk bars become meeting places to listen to hits from the juke box. The society reacts with irritation.

Thanks to full employment and rising income the dream of good life is near at hand. The corpulent figure is a sign of success. The private consumption is getting the motor of the economy. The self-service shop becomes established as a new branch of business. Furniture and household appliances  become important. The furnishings, the first purchase of a young family, are supposed to demonstrate social rise and middle-class normality. What was considered as modern under the sign of reconstruction and economic miracle, soon got a stuffy and involuntarily funny image. The „fifties" - an era of resolute lapse of taste?

A stroll through the Fifties
Kidney-shaped table and jukebox, moped, petticoat and jeans with studs, rock `n roll and hula-hoop, bag lamp and pretzel holder - these words characterize the fifties and the early sixties. The collector Corinna Wodarz and the museum of Herzogenaurach have created an exposition which fills the fans with enthusiasm: objects of everyday culture, clothes, electric appliances and furnishings in typical design convey the way of life during these years. Many associate curved, cheerful shapes, bright colours and pastels with this decade as well as an easiness that seems to contrast with the worries of the people. The older generation will remember. The young visitors will have the possibility to get to know this epoch.
