In 1972, the Bavarian State Ministry proposed that Herzogenaurach assume a sponsorship for the West African town of Kaya, located in former Upper Volta, today called Burkina Faso. Ten years later, this sponsorship has evolved into a partnership.
With a whole range of fund-raising campaigns like musical performances, the harvest festival or the "run for Kaya" (Lauf für Kaya), schools, parishes, companies and clubs have supported projects in Kaya from the beginning. Through participation in charity events as well as through mutual visits, the residents of Herzogenaurach have the possibility to get to know African culture.
In the framework of a local government reform in 2006, 70 villages were assigned to the town of Kaya which considerably increased its population. Today, the town has approx. 115,000 inhabitants; the distance between Kaya and Herzogenaurach is about 5,100 km.
